Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
