A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
